The Origin of the Word Bellapais

The name “Bellapais” is formed from the combination of two separate words:
•    “Bella” → means beautiful in Italian.
•    “Pais / Paix / Paese” → depending on the language usage of the period, it carries meanings such as palace, residence or settlement.
For this reason, the name Bellapais historically corresponds to meanings such as “Beautiful Palace”, “Beautiful Settlement” or “Beautiful Place of Peace”. In some sources, because the word is associated with the French word “paix” meaning peace, it is also interpreted as “Beautiful Peace”.

Why Was Bellapais Monastery Given This Name?

Bellapais Monastery was built in the 13th century during the rule of the Lusignans in Cyprus. This was a period when the island was in close interaction with European culture. Most of the monks living in the monastery were members of the French-origin Premonstratensian Order. Therefore, the name of the monastery was also derived from the European languages of the period.

The beauty of the monastery’s location, the elegance of its architecture and the peaceful atmosphere surrounding it perfectly match the meaning of the name “Bellapais”.

Where Does the Expression “White-Clad Nuns” Come From?

The name Bellapais is sometimes referred to among the local people as the “monastery of white-clad nuns”. The reason for this is:
•    The monks of the Premonstratensian Order wore white garments
•    The monastery became associated with this order throughout history
For this reason, Bellapais has strengthened the image of a “monastery dressed in white” through both its name and its cultural background.

Conclusion: Bellapais Is Both a Religious and Cultural Heritage of Cyprus

Today, the name Bellapais represents not only a monastery, but also the history of Cyprus, its culture and the multi-layered past of the Mediterranean. Meaning “Beautiful Palace”, this name is a powerful cultural symbol that reflects both the architectural beauty and the peaceful atmosphere of the monastery.
